IBNS-CMEDIA: Indian-origin US Congressman Ro Khanna has condemned the killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh as “horrific,” an incident that has triggered global outrage and protests.
“The killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu garment worker in Bangladesh, is horrific. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family,” Khanna wrote on X.
He added, “We must unequivocally condemn and speak out against these vile acts of hatred and bigotry.”
Reacting to the brutal lynching, a US State Department spokesperson told IANS, as quoted by NDTV, that Washington “unequivocally condemns religious violence in all its forms.” The spokesperson said the United States welcomed steps being taken by Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure the safety and security of all communities and reaffirmed US support for “religious freedom and freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.”
Dipu Chandra Das was killed on December 18, an incident that drew widespread condemnation within Bangladesh and from the international community, once again raising concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country.
Another fatal lynching raises fresh alarm
Even as investigations into Das’s killing continue, Bangladesh has witnessed another fatal lynching, deepening fears over escalating mob violence and deteriorating public safety.
The latest victim has been identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, who was allegedly beaten to death by local residents following accusations of extortion, according to police.
The incident has further heightened anxiety, particularly among minority communities, amid ongoing political and social unrest in the country.
Police detail events leading to Mondal’s death
Police said they rushed to the scene after receiving emergency information and found Mondal in critical condition, The Daily Star reported. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later sent to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
While condemning the incident, Bangladesh’s interim government said there was no communal angle to the violence.
Killing comes days after Dipu Das lynching
The latest lynching occurred less than a week after Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu youth, was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh district. Das was allegedly accused of blasphemy, assaulted, and his body later set on fire—an act that sparked sharp criticism at home and abroad.
The back-to-back killings have intensified calls for tougher action against mob violence and stronger safeguards for vulnerable and minority communities across Bangladesh.
