Toronto/CMEDIA: Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., becomes the first Canadian man, since Pat Fletcher in 1954, to win the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday at Toronto’s Oakdale Golf and Country Club.
“That is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!!!! Congrats @ntaylorgolf59! 20 years ago @mweirsy inspired a bunch of Canadians like Nick to pursue their dream, and now Nick has done the same. What a moment for Canadian golf,” Hughes tweeted.
“To break that curse, if you want to call it that, is … I’m pretty speechless,” Taylor was reported to say. “I don’t think it’s going to sink in for quite some time what happened today.”
During the third round which began on Saturday morning, Taylor had struggled to a 3-over 75 in the first round and landed into the weekend with a 67 to sit at 2-under.
But then he set a new course record at Oakdale and headed into the fourth round in a tie with England’s Aaron Rai for eighth at 11-under.
Finally Taylor’s gallery grew with each hole on Sunday and the word spread that he had taken the lead.
Taylor becomes the fourth Canadian to win on the PGA Tour this season and joins Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Svensson in the winners’ circle.
