Washington/IBNS: Following his controversial acquisition of Twitter five months ago, Elon Musk has now overtaken former US President Barack Obama to become the most followed account on the social media platform.
As per their Twitter profiles, at 11:11 pm IST on Thursday, Musk had 133,096,649 followers, surpassing Obama’s count of 133,041,151 followers.
This comes five months after Musk’s acquisition of the California-based company for $44 billion in October.
Sawyer Merritt, an investor in Tesla, has stated that the CEO of the company and the world’s second-richest person is adding an average of 100,000 followers to his Twitter account every day.
Although some had predicted an earlier timeline, the SpaceX founder’s rise to the top spot on Twitter took slightly longer than anticipated.
In November, the analytics website Social Blade informed the BBC that Musk would surpass Obama on Jan 17.
With over 100 million followers, Canadian singer Justin Bieber holds the third position on Twitter’s most-followed accounts list. He is followed by musicians Katy Perry and Rihanna, as well as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Other notable figures in the top 10 include singer Taylor Swift, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US President Donald Trump, and musician Lady Gaga.
