According to Statistics Canada’s crime severity index (CSI), which measures the severity of crime in a given area, Calgary is generally considered a safe city, with a lower crime rate compared to other major cities in Canada.
Toronto and Vancouver have similar levels of crime overall, but the types of crime most common in each city can differ.
For example, Toronto tends to have a higher rate of property crime, while Vancouver has a higher rate of drug offenses.
Apart from monitoring the severity level of police-reported crime, the CSI also measures the overall seriousness of crime from one year to the next by tracking both the prevalence of crime within a community and the seriousness of the crimes committed.
